Kids Sewing Classes Camp C -  Tweens and Teens - Advanced Beginner Machine Sewing - Ages 8 and up

Click here to download the 2024 Kids Sewing Classes Summer Camp Schedule.

This week long class is geared toward children 8-14 that have completed Tweens/Teens Camp - Beginning Machine Sewing (or are very familiar with machine sewing). This class builds on the basics learned in that class. Use of Granary Sewing machines and tools during class time, and all materials are included in the fee. Children will make a pieced drawstring backpack, pajama pants, and wallet. The projects are suitable for (and we have fabric for) all genders and ages. Additional projects will be added depending on the childs skill level.

In addition to excellent guidance and instruction, children will receive a project box of their own, patterns for the projects, and the fabric/materials required to complete the projects. Note: Needles, scissors, and irons and may be used in class so very minor injuries are possible. Children are supervised at all times and we go over all safety rules at the beginning of each session. We expect children to have good listening skills, good self-control, and the ability to follow directions. For advanced students, at the teacher’s discretion, rotary cutters may also be used in this class; again we expect children to be able to follow directions and have good self-control.

During class they will learn how to read both basic and commercial clothing patterns, measure themselves to choose the correct size, how-to cut out the patterns, and assemble the garment. They will also learn how to install an elastic waistband as well as finishing techniques including making a casing and hemming. Many other advanced beginner projects will also be offered depending on the child's skill level.

Since students work at their own pace, some may not completely finish all their projects during class time, but they can take their project patterns and materials home with their sewing tool kit. They will need sharp fabric scissors and a sewing machine to finish the projects at home.

CLASS TIMES: Meets for five consecutive days, for 3 hours a day - includes a 15 minute snack break each day. Bring a snack and a drink. If your child tends to get cold, please send them with a sweater.

Children are supervised at all times. Class sizes vary from 4-14 students (1-2 instructors). We use standard adult tools and some are sharp. Children will receive a pair of pointed, sharp thread-snips in their sewing tool kit in addition to pins and needles to take home.

Parents cannot attend class or wait inside the shop for kids in class.

Children may attend multiple sessions of this class.

CLASS WAIVER: You must complete and sign the Kids Class Waiver in order for your child to attend class. Please download the waiver, print, fill out, and sign. You must drop off a hard-copy of the signed waiver prior to the start of the first day of class (you can bring it the first day). Click here to download the Kids Class Waiver PDF.

DROP-OFF and PICK-UP RULES: You may drop your child off 10 minutes before class starts. Please escort your child into the class area and sign-in with the teacher. Please arrive 5-10 minutes before pick-up time. You must come into the class area and sign-out your child before leaving.

CANCELLATION POLICY: For all Kids Camp classes, after June 1st, no refunds will be given once registration is paid. Up to one week before the class start date, you may switch your child to a different camp class (that they have completed the prerequisites for) or transfer the registration to another child (that has completed the prerequisites), if there is space available. We do not prorate or refund camp fees for missed days. If your child becomes ill during the week of camp and is unable to attend, we cannot prorate the registration fee, however, we will do our best to allow them to come to another camp session to finish their projects if space is available.

COVID/Vaccinations POLICY: Up-to-date COVID vaccinations/boosters and all vaccinations required by local public schools are required for class attendance. There are no exceptions. Please understand this requirement is for your safety and the safety of others. Depending on county guidelines, masks (well-fitting (K)N95 or equivalent) may be required during class in the class area. If required, students may remove their masks in the snack area during snack time.
