This week-long class is geared toward children 8-14 that are new to hand sewing or that need a refresher and enjoy making a variety of craft projects. All embroidery, hand sewing and crafting basics are covered. Children will explore a variety small hand sewing projects from making stuffed felties, embroidery, embellishing small pouches, as well as many other small craft projects. All materials are included in the fee. We have projects for all genders and all ages, so gather siblings, cousins, friends and come enjoy this fun week-long class.
We recommend children with no sewing experience take this class before machine sewing to become familiar with using scissors to cut fabric and working with needle and thread. Children will also learn about reading basic directions and using different tools and media to create craft projects. Note: Needles, scissors, irons and low-heat glue guns may be used in class so very minor injuries are possible. Children are supervised at all times and we go over all safety rules at the beginning of each session. We expect children to have good listening skills, good self-control, and the ability to follow directions.
In addition to excellent guidance and instruction, children will receive a project box of their own, a basic hand sewing/embroidery tool kit, and materials for all projects.
During class they will learn how to read a pattern, cut out pattern pieces, pin pattern pieces to felt and cut out, prepare the thread and needle, as well as basic hand stitches (straight-stitch, whip-stitch, blanket-stitch). They will learn to stuff their creations, sew on a button, add embellishments, features, and letters to their creations. We have dozens of feltie patterns to choose from for all ages and genders. In addition, they will learn some basic embroidery stitches and make a monogram wall hanging. They will also learn several ways to embellish pre-made zipper pouches with iron-on fabrics. Craft projects include making small bead and felt bowls, diamond painting, as well as decorating small frames and boxes.
Since students work at their own pace, some may not completely finish all their projects during class time, but they can take their project patterns and materials home with their sewing tool kit. Household scissors, sharp fabric scissors, and glue may be required to finish the projects at home.
CLASS TIMES: Meets for five consecutive days, for 3 hours a day - Includes a 15 minute snack break each day. Bring a snack and a drink. If your child tends to get cold, please send them with a sweater.
Children are supervised at all times. Class sizes vary from 4-16 students. We use standard adult tools and some are sharp. Children will receive a pair of pointed, sharp thread-snips in their sewing tool kit in addition to pins and needles to take home.
Parents cannot attend class or wait inside the shop for kids in class.
Children my attend multiple sessions of this class. The basics taught are the same, but there is a large variety of projects to choose from, so they can make many different projects.
